Moments of rarity are moments of clarity

There are times in life when you just feel like your mind is floating and you are just floating along with it. Go with the flow as they say. But then you realize that time is wasting away while you just sit there trying to figure things out.

Time waits for no one. In a moment of clarity, I was reminded of this this morning. I was sitting contemplating on my next review schedule and how to cram all of the things I still have to do when I had the urge to turn around and look at the window. That was when I was gifted with this rare moment.

Do you see the little bird in the photo just by the corner of the window? That was a common bird found in our area. But its species do not normally rest on window ledges of a house. In fact they do not normally go anywhere near windows. So this was a rare and nice surprise. And I realized I was gifted with this special moment and I had to grab it. Slowly I crept up and took a photo of it. I could only get so close to it so I had to zoom in the camera on my phone to get a clear shot.

When I got the shot, the realization hit me. The time to strike is never a moment you wait for later. When you are gifted the opportunity, grab it and make the most of it. You never know when, or if at all, it will come again.

At the very moment this came to mind, another bird rested on the ledge. As I tried to get a photograph with the both of them in it, they sensed my presence and flew away. Greed and excess is never gifted. Sometimes all you need to do is appreciate what you are given and not take too much.

My mind automatically regreted attempting to take the second photograph since it was not necessary at all. At least that was what felt right. And if it feels right, then it must be right.

Every moment is special even in the most mundane of circumstances. Treasure these and the small moments as gifts. Do not take them forgranted, and do not take them to excess.

Dear 30 year-old me

Do you own a car already? I hope so. That was one of the goals I had for you when I was 15 years old. By now you should have already saved up enough.

Expectations and more expectations seem to be coming my way. Expectations others have of me, and expectations I have of myself. "Being adult" was a goal I made for myself at 24 years old. By now I hope that it has established itself in my subconscious that it is already a habit. Among the virtues behind this goal is knowing how to manage expectations. In my case, it is learning how to deal with pressure and my anxiety. By now I am idealistic and realistic that I have overcome this. Hopefully.

Nevertheless, I also hope that by now I have settled my financial life. At the very least I hope my savings account is stable; my investments account is progressing exponentially; and my life insurance is set. At the very least I also hope to have enough savings to invest in my dream house. Career-wise, I hope that we are doing well.

I always used to remind myself that focus is key and that determination is the gas that will take you there. For someone who does not know or think much about cars I sure am writing a lot about them here.

As for my personal life, well at the very least I hope to have more true friends than before. It seems odd even for me not to have made at least three to five new friends over the years. I know I am socially awkward, but not that awkward.

Why am I writing these down? Well I hope I remember them. At most I hope I can surpass them and beyond by this age.

Oddly enough, I just realized there is nothing here about my family. By this time I hope that we have maintained our bond.

Well, that's all for now. If you ever come across this entry at a leter age, at the very least I hope this reminds you of its purpose. ;)

Set high, aim high!

Truly yours,
- Dani

To my 25 year-old self

You have reached the age of having a complete mind. Congratulations! This greeting is in the hopes of you being able to actually discern things properly.

There are a lot of things you still need to learn. But now that your mind is theoretically full, it might get harder. But who is to say that you can't believe you can still learn.

Among these things is honesty. You have been doing good with being honesty with others and with God (hopefully). But honesty with yourself is an entirely different story. You are now 25 years old. I am hoping you now realize the importance and significance of this virtue. If you still think that there are available excuses for being dishonest especially with yourself, then you are fooling no one and wasting no one's time but your own. You are making a fool out of yourself and no one else.

Another value you need to learn is reaponsibility. "Being adult" has recently taught you this; but I wonder some5imes if you can make it stick. You are 25 years old now. You should know the difference between being responsible and being reprehensible. An unpleasant attitude is also never an excuse to pursue "responsibility". That is just a selfish thing to do and you know it. Remember always what responsibility means and remember it for good.

You also seems to have let youself go awry lately. Never lose control of what you have been given the opportunity to control. Relevant to this, always keep in mind faith and focus. A so-called mid-life crisis is not something you should let in the way of your goals.

And speaking of goals. Setting goals requires self-honesty. If you are questioning your goals, make sure you are questioning them for the right reason and not because of self-doubt.

You know yourself best: what you need, what you want, what you can have, and what you can do. You know yourself best. So why doubt you? If you doubt because of what they say about you or what they think they know about you, remember this: what they think of you does not matter the most. What you think of yourself is what matters most.

In case of doubt, remember this quote: "I did it because I wanted to. I wanted to because they said I could not." It seems a little extrinsic and negatively motivated, yes. But as I said, remember this only in the most dire of need.

"Being adult" does not only mean being responsible. It also means being humble. In the past few years I think I have learned this. But recently, attempts to further my confidence blurred this virtue a little. So today, my hope is I can relearn the balance between being confident and being humble at the same time.

As I pour these thoughts out in this letter, my mind is beginning to calm down. You will notice that only a few moments earlier I wrote a letter to our 20 year-old self. I think it is because what I chose to shed and leave behind was trying to haunt me in my moment of doubt. I was so vulnerable just a few minutes ago that anxiety came back. Thankfully it is now beginning to crawl away again.

Lastly, "being adult" means knowing how to find your happiness in your life. So my hope for you is that you find happiness in everyday no matter what. Do not ever let this thing called quarterlife crisis get the better of you. Do not ever let any challenge take you down.

Whenever you feel defeated, always view things as a challenge. You like challenges. So you like dealing with them. ;) As you once said, it is just mind over matter.

Truly yours,
-Dani

Now go beat that bar exam!

An open letter to my 20 year-old self

You may think you are invincible; but you are just as vulnerable as the rest of humanity. To what you may ask? To everything.

Things will begin, if not continue, to go wrong. Not everything will go your way as you want and as you planned. In fact, things  will begin to feel like they are always falling apart around you. You will feel stressed, pressured, lost, anxious, and even depressed. The initial idea that "things will get better" will seem like an unlikely illusion meant only for movies and tv shows.

But you know what, everything will be okay. Through the next few years you will wncounter insurmountable challenges that will lead you to doubt yourself and even lose a sense of direction. You will feel unworthy of anything and everything; and you will feel useless to the extent of wanting to give up. But the thing that gets you through is you. And undoubtedly, you may be lost and you may feel useless; but the best thing about you is you never give up. You are a fighter and you are a winner in life.

Sometime during law school you will confirm and affirm to yourself through a series of self-administered psychological and social tests based on research that you have depression and anxiety disorder. Perhaps even a little of something within the realm of autism; but that requires an indepth clinical evaluation of which I am incapable of. Nevertheless, by confirming this you faced one of the toughest obstacles in your life. You did not deny yourself and you faced it head on. You opened yourself to some serious detriment and still pursued law. Only this time you had a clearer view of things and a different perspective. You will learn how to deal with yourself and you will learn how to be a better version of you. But moat of all, you will learn to trust yourself again and to trust in God again. You will learn what it means to be genuinely happy in yourself and because of that you are a hero to me. You see, you saved me from unknowingly spiraling into a depth of depressed unconsciousness and subconsciousness. You did this on your own and you did this by will. And for that I will be eternally grateful to you.

Learning to deal and handle this on your own takes courage and determination. And that time you had the strength of both. How did you do this? Well I think you can figure that one out again. Afrer all, you never quit. ;)

As I write this now I am actually tearing up a little. I am on the verge of crediting these tears to an ongoing mood swing but I honestly think it is a mild anxiety attack. I still don't know if things will get better for us tomorrow or the next day or even the next year. What I do know is that I should keep the faith becaue keeping faith is what got us through the roughest times and the hardest of challenges. Remember to always be faithful. Be faithful to God, and be faithful to yourself.

Humbly yours,
-Dani

Day 10, #100happydays

Just noticed that I have been chronicling my experiences for ten days now. It might not be much, but that's an achievement for me even though I don't do it regularly. Anyway, I won't be talking about anything in particular today. My happiest moment today was being able to experience a free and open mind again. I've forgotten how good it felt to not feel too much pressure in your mind; how to be relaxed but angst at the same time. It felt really good. Because of that, I was able to accomplish several tasks today.

I know, I know. I'm talking about school work again. I can't help it. Sometimes I think making great achievements there will be the only thing that can bring me absolute happiness these days. Perhaps that is true. But I'll have to change something if I'm going to get there. You see, I've been trying to reach my full potential in that respect, but can't seem to manage to do so. I think I know why.

But anyway, that experience made me happy today because it made me feel that I had a chance, and that I was actually capable of greater and better things than I've been recently lead to believe.

Side note: I also had fun during our first moot court mock trial today in our environmental litigation class. Who knew it would be so much fun to observe and criticize your peers? :P Hope we do well in ours. haha.

Day 9, #100happydays

A simple and quite shallow joy today: Toby Regbo.

I have a new-found fondness for the series Reign, starring Toby Regbo as dauphin Francis. Although he is ill-fated, I enjoy seeing his face on the screen. In addition, we just so happened to have the same birthdate. Haha. There is just something about his eyes, aside form the clear color, that draws you in.

Shameless as it may seem, I will show you his photograph. And also, I will plug their show here because I discovered a new period drama set in the same timeline as the near-end of the Tudor monarchy.

Reign is airing in the US on its first season. The series follows the life of Mary, Queen of Scots. If you have not heard of her either, she is the cousin of Queen Elizabeth I, and is the character on which a nursery rhyme was based on. The rhyme goes something like this: "Mary, Mary, quite contrary. How does your garden grow?"

If you're a history buff, you probably know the fate of all the characters in this series. But tune in anyway because, as we know in these historical dramas, there is always a twist with the stretch of the truth.

Toby Regbo on the set of Reign.
                                                     Photograph is not mine.

Just don't mind the facial hair or the scruffy hair; they're part of his character. He still looks good regardless.

Anyway, so that's my simple joy for today. And in the same way, I hope you found a simple joy too!

Day 7, #100happydays

My day began very frustrating because aside from the fact that we got stuck in traffic, my professor never showed up. We ended up waiting in the room for two hours, for nothing. After that, I sped off to try and make this the most productive day ever. I ended up ticking off just two items on my five-point to-do list. Incredible, I know.

After attempting to finish my studies at a coffee shop, I slept happily in our car on the way home. Please note that the use of the word happily here does not indicate that this was my happiness today. That being said, I came home, and lounged around doing nothing because I couldn't force myself to. I can't really say that anything today was very happy for me other than the time we spent talking about random things in the classroom while waiting.

The conversations we had went round and round from subjects to strippers. Don't ask me how it got there. I will only say that right now, I think I'm getting an idea from those topics for my thesis. I hope I'm on the right track, and I hope that I am at least on a track right now. Hmmm..

Happy first day of March

P.S.
Because of that, I want to watch the movie Ides of March :)

Day 5, #100happydays

It is nearing the end of the day and I still haven't found anything very significant for it to be my "happiness" today. However, I remembered what I wrote when I started this challenge. It does not need to be a grand matter for that thing to make you happy.

Nothing too big happened to me today. I actually slept in and even almost neglected some of my tasks. Yes, it was a lazy day. Then again, I needed the rest. So for today I guess my happiness is that I was able to refresh and re-energize myself. The best part is that after I felt rested, I was able to pick up on my tasks and actually accomplish them. Where is the happiness in that? It is in me finally being able to get control over myself and maintaining the momentum regarding my studies, which I started a few days ago.

It might seem odd, but today, my happiness is in this new discipline. :)

Day 4, #100happydays

Day four of the challenge brought about my happiness early on in the day. My simple happiness today is my food. :)

While waiting for my parents during breakfast, before leaving for school, I made my lunch. After letting it cool on the ride to school, I ate it with a dose of my favorite CBTL drink. The drink was a bit of indulgence I gave myself for motivation to get through the day. I have to say, despite the pasta being "instant", it was a delight to the senses. A bit of comfort food.

Why was this my happiness today? Simply because I made a meal for myself to bring to school. A small effort that can yield bigger results given my consistency.

Here's to hoping more happiness comes to all:)

Happiness

So you've probably heard of the #100happydays phenomenon in cyberspace. I actually researched what it meant because since the beginning of the year, people have been placing that hashtag in their posts. Only today did I finally get around to satisfying my curiosity. So if you are annoyed by seeing those posts, forgive me because I will now be joining the bandwagon.

The #100happydays was actually a challenge begun by an Indian columnist addressed to the whole world. The challenge is to find what your happiness was for the day despite the endeavors and difficulties that day has thrown on you. I found it intriguing though that this challenge had to come about for people to even consider finding happiness each day. But, as the saying goes, don't drop it til you've tried it. Considering the stressful environment we are all forced to live in today, it doesn't hurt to have this as a constant reminder that we should always be happy.

There have been other such reminders over the years scattered in movies, old quotes, books, and even songs telling us to value our days and to never let ourselves be put down by even the biggest of challenges we are facing. Two such quotes are "Smile for just five minutes a day. After a while you'll see it comes naturally" (Love Happens), and "Always look for the silver lining" (unknown). I guess such reminders are worth repeating generation after generation because we do change, and we do need reminders that keep up with the pace of our lifestyle. So today, it makes sense that this reminder would  come through as a challenge in cyberspace.

I am joining this challenge because I too seem to lack incentive to find what makes me happy everyday. Also, I think that having such a reminder will later on help me see more things I need to and can be thankful for.

I decided to join today because of two coincidental reasons: 1) I happen to want to search for the meaning of the hashtag, and it so happens that 2) I needed to see happiness in what transpired for me today. The day began for me as a slow day. After a sportsfest gone wrong on my part, I went home using public transportation from a place I have never been to before. The happiness for me today, as shallow as you think it may seem, was that moment I learned to commute from this unfamiliar place, back to my home because I actually learned something for myself and on my own. Oddly enough, I was wearing a shirt with the statement "happiness" on it on the ride home.

So there you go, day 1 of my #100happydays is this simple achievement I have for myself. You can try it too if you want. Your happiness doesn't have to come from anything flamboyant or extraordinary. You just have to learn to see for yourself where it is, and that I think is where the challenge lies.

Art Filed: To my Inang Bayan :)

A belated happy Independence Day to my beloved Philippines!

In relation to my recent theme of feminism in history, I would like to honor the women in Philippine history. In every single account we always hear of the glorious battles that the men have won. Seldom however do we ever hear of the women who have made their significant contribution to our motherland's freedom.

I do not want to criticize on my country's history of freedom, but I'd just like to point out that I think one of the most genuine outcomes from our independence came from the helms of women. So to honor the invisible women in Philippine independence, I created this picture depicting the three women who sew the Philippine flag as it is today.

May our sovereignty and independence prosper more.

Art Filed: Tree-ties

Since I figure I won't be around for a while-- back to school work and all-- I would post this end of summer art work I produced. I literally drew this on the last day of my summer vacation. I hope that this picture gives you a good and relaxing sense while you look at it.

The mark of a good artist is that she can impart her thoughts and visions with clarity and discretion through her visual manifestations. I hope I achieved that at least in part with this piece. I posted the original as well as the digitally edited ones.

The picture will serve as my momentary hiatus from my blog. But I will be back :). So in a way, this is my treaty with you. Haha.

Happy Mothers' Day!

To celebrate all the wonderful mothers out there, I would just like to share a quote from a book I am currently reading. I'll post a review on it soon, but for now I want to take everyone's attention to our mothers.

Women in general were taken for granted in old times, but that has somehow changed today. Although some still think men are the stronger creatures, it is proven otherwise. I will not daly to give evidence and prove that women are stronger because time and time again it has been proven. And if you play the game of chess, you will realize this one way or another. I realized this as I read this book. And my appreciation for my fellow females has grown greater. Together with it, my appreciation for mothers and my respect for them has increased by a multitude of levels.

Women are strong, but it is the mothers who are she strongest women of all. They juggle their time and are able to do so perfectly. They balance strength and elegance with cunning wit that even some men are at awe that they are mothers. Some men even take more pride in knowing that their mothers are the one who give them direction in life. They try to make everything as perfect as can be for their children, their husbands, their family and their friends.

How can they manage it? They are mothers, and I guess becoming one brings with it the innate traits of becoming the greatest woman that you can be.

"All women are creatures of divided nature" is what the book says of a man who had trouble understanding his wife. He had trouble because he could not understand why she did the things she did, when they wee only to keep his and her own vows alive. So you see, where men cannot see beyond what they think, women act for them both. And these women are the mothers who love their families unconditionally.

So the next time you see your mother, give her a hug and thank her for giving you what she could because she probably went through hell and back to give them to you. And tell her happy mothers' day not only today, but every single day.

Happy Mothers' Day to all you lovely moms and to all mothers to be!

PS

Women lose three years of their life after giving birth. So thank your mothers for the sacrifice they made for you.

Hello January!

Happy New Year!

Because January 1 posts are so passe :)) I am posting this the day after. 2012 has been a blast and with this blog starting just a few months ago, I'm thrilled to have had a couple of viewers across the world. I hope that my posts gave you something to get by or at least something to remember. But as we say goodbye to another year, we look forward to this year for new experiences. Here's to hoping for the best of the best in 2013. And as for this blog, I'll go ahead and say that I will be revamping this as a features and journal blog.

I hear you think out loud that there's nothing new about that or that it's very rampant already. I say watch out because the best is yet to come;)

As a tribute post to 2012, here's a peek at some of the best pages from my 2012 planner:)

Definitely one of my favorite pages to fill :D

Coffee Fancy

Every so often in a week I visit my favorite coffee shop just to hang out and to spend some time studying. I usually study there while waiting for my ride. And usually I go to just this one branch near campus. It was the first one to open in the area so it's the one that I've gotten used to. Now there are tow other branches along Taft Avenue and these ones are much more closer to campus. But even though that's the case, I still prefer the first one just because:)

But in the past three weeks, I haven't been doing that routine. I've been going to other branches of this coffee shop in the area with some friends. As much as I love spending some quality time with myself, I enjoy spending such time with friends while sharing and making fun memories. Today, we went to one of the branches at the Mall of Asia. We intended to study there but ended up just talking :))

I wanted to share this coffee experience with you because usually, when people visit coffee shops, they go there to hang out with friends, or by themselves, or just buy something to go. I'd like you to try the option I've had for these past weeks and hang out and study at the same time (or at least try studying hahaha). It's a great form of stress reliever:) Between all the exams, this is just the kind of unwinding experience I needed to push me through a very heavy term of cases. Just to give me something to anticipate in school :)

Not to leave you hanging, here are some photos of the drinks and food we ordered :)  They're some of the regular and specialties of the shop today, but what really made them special today is the sharing experience :D

Appreciate the Magnificence Around

In the scale of my life, I never really thought I'd get to say that I have a favorite place to stay at outside of home. It's sort of a get away place from all the stress and the rush of the city. The just irony is that it is within the city :)

Try and guess where this is:)
Look for it in TripAdvisory or Googlemaps so you can also enjoy and experience the one of a kind treatment me and my family got here tonight.

Tonight was an extension of my birthday celebration. Though I haven't fulfilled my fantasy birthday party yet, *here's to hoping :p* I did get one of the most treasured moments I have always wanted. I got to spend some intimate time with my family:) Needless to say this hotel did its part in making it an even more special event. We've stayed here before, and we just had to do it again! The best part about it is, not just the location, but also the amenities and the facilities. It's been around for a century yet it doesn't fail to catch up with the times while restoring its native ambiance. And me being a fan of historical things and whatnot, of course, love the place. :) From the lobby right down to the smallest detail of every room, every turn gives you a taste of Philippine history! As exciting as it is to live in modern times, I bet that people will love this place as much as I do.

That's the Cafe we went to:) guess now you know where this is;)

This lovely wall makes a great replacement for a signboard.
It doesn't hurt either that it's very artistic.

Oh! And I forgot to mention my favorite, THE FOOD!

The Cafe here appears nothing special at first glance. Just another ordinary restaurant at a hotel. But in comparison to the other hotels I've stayed at locally and abroad, the food they serve here is by far a slice of heaven :) So foodies, if you're looking to spot a new place to try, I recommend the cafe in this hotel :)

Before the buffet started :)
I didn't take a picture of my main course because, well, I was too preoccupied with savoring it.
But, here's the bread I had, with some of the most delicious cheeses I've tasted! Not to salty, nor smelly either:)

A soft roll, a slice of french bread, a bread stick,  and
some crackers

The theme for the night was seafood Friday! So needless to say I ate plenty of fish.
However, here are some photos of the heavenly desserts they had.

And I must say this comes in first for me in tonight's servings! :D

But let's not forget, because it was my birthday celebration, I got a free chocolate cake! :D Just looking at it now makes my mouth water all over again!

Oh and I had a crepe too, because I just love  how they make those at this cafe:)

That's it for today's entry. I hope you enjoyed the spot and dishes I showed you. Hopefully it encourages you to visit new and interesting places. Here's a tip, try and go to places you don't normally go and try the best they have to offer. If you don't like it, go to their menu and look for the next best thing for you. If not, just try and enjoy the place. That usually helps conjure up some great perspective.

Til next entry!

Enjoy new things, but remember, keep them in moderation!
Thanks for taking time to celebrate with me:)
